MEMBERSHIP MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

The number of ATI members inched upward in December and early January.

We now have 62 Individual, 21 Organizational, and 7 Auxiliary members; and, although each Organizational member has only one vote in ATI Board of Directors elections and other association matters, if we counted our non-voting travel trainer members who work at our Organizational member entities, ATI is way over the century mark! We want to thank members who have taken one of the key points from our “future of ATI” discussion at the August 2008 conference—the need to expand outreach about ATI—to heart, by actively signing up new members. Thank you ATI, and keep it moving forward.

MORE OUTREACH

During December, ATI e-mailed a press release about the date of our 2009 St. Louis conference and the availability of this E-newsletter to directors of University Centers of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities.

We also received two commitments via e-mail to print this release in the February e-newsletter of NICHCY—the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities; NICHCY is operated by the Academy for Educational Development, and it is funded by the Office of Special Education Programs of the U.S. Department of Education. Our second commitment came from the COO of the large, Washington, D.C.-based American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD), to print at least a portion of the ATI release in their next member newsletter. Also, an announcement of the ATI E-News’ availability was found in the bi-monthly Easter Seals Project ACTION Update print newsletter.

THE ATI CODE OF ETHICS

At an August 17, 2008 Directors meeting, the ATI Board voted to send out our Code of Ethics to the membership, requesting only that each Individual and Organizational member read it, and then sign and return the simple form at the end of the Code to ATI.

Please read it over by clicking here. Organizational members are asked to select one person from the organization as its “voting member” to accomplish this task. It is important to point out that ATI will begin the process of updating our online Registry of members soon, and that Individual and Organizational members are asked to read, sign, and return the Code of Ethics form to ATI in order to be listed in the Registry. If for any reason you are having trouble clicking through to the Code of Ethics, you can also find it on the ATI Home page, www.travelinstruction.org.

EASTER SEALS PROJECT ACTION "INTRODUCTION TO TRAVEL TRAINING" COURSES SET

Dates and locations for the three remaining ESPA travel training courses have been finalized.

They are April 28 to 30 in Dallas, TX; June 22 to 24 in Sacramento, CA; and, August 11 to 13 in Weehawken, NJ, just outside of New York City. These popular three-day, hands-on training events get booked up quickly so readers are urged to reserve your spot sooner rather than later. For additional information, go to http://projectaction.easterseals.com.

PRESIDENT OBAMA AND DISABILITIES

At 12:01 PM on Inauguration Day, our new president and his staff hit the ground running by launching the new White House website, http://www.whitehouse.gov.

Click on the Agenda on the top page menu, and you will find a list of 24 critical issues that impact Americans every day. “Disabilities” is agenda item # 3. Never before has a newly-elected president started from minute 1 of his presidency with such an informed recognition that disability issues need to be worked on, and that they require effort starting now. ATI urges its members to check out the “Disabilities” page. It is interactive, and it is a chance for travel trainers to educate the Obama Administration about who we are, what we do, and what we need in order to grow our profession.

FORWARD THIS NEWSLETTER

Know other travel trainers who are not ATI members, or other persons simply interested in ATI’s mission?

If so, please forward this issue to them. Help ATI build our membership and attract new sponsors!
