BALTIMORE SITE OF
2010 ATI CONFERENCE
At its meeting on
November 21st, the Association of Travel Instruction Board of
Directors voted to hold its 2010 Professional Development Conference
at the Sheraton Baltimore City Center Hotel in August of 2010.
At press time, negotiations on the contract for the exact date and
other conference details are ongoing. Our host hotel is located a
mere three blocks from the beautiful Inner Harbor area, with its
lovely views and fantastic restaurants. Also within walking distance
from the hotel are the Fort McHenry National Monument, the Maryland
Science Center, the National Aquarium and Oriole Park at Camden
Yards. So, ATI members and friends, please start thinking about a
presentation that you would like to deliver at our Baltimore
Conference in August of 2010, because our “Call for Papers” will
soon be available. |

TRAVEL TRAINING
OUTSIDE THE BOX
New Association of Travel Instruction Board Member Michael
McDermott delivered a presentation titled “Training the Non-Literate
Customer” that was extremely well-received at the July 31-August 2,
2009 ATI Conference in St. Louis.
Mike and his staff of travel trainers use “flash cards” to help
trainees with poor or no reading skills learn how to get on the
correct Metro bus or MetroLink train.
CLICK HERE to read the details of the procedures Mike and his
team follow to insure that his customers arrive independently and
safely. |

YOUR IDEAS NEEDED FOR
2010 CONFERENCE "CALL FOR PAPERS"
August
2010 is not all that far away.
Soon, ATI
will be issuing its “Call for Papers” for the 2010 Conference in
Baltimore. It would be a tremendous help right now for the
Conference Committee co-chairs Rosanne Bopp and Terry Moakley to
learn what travel training subjects our members/readers want to
learn about. ATI asks those persons who have presented in the
past AND other persons working in the travel training field to
let ATI know what should be on our agenda. What aspects of
travel training have you struggled with? What important topics
would you like to see covered at our next conference? Please
e-mail your ideas either to Rosanne at
rozzdom@aol.com, or to Terry at
tmoakley@unitedspinal.org. Thank you in advance.

WHAT DO ATI COMMITTEES
DO?
The Association
of Travel Instruction currently maintains the following seven (7)
standing committees: Membership; Registration; Publications; Ethics;
Nominations/Award; Conference; and, Organization/Capacity Building.
You will find a description of the issues that each of ATI’s
committees works on if you
CLICK
HERE. Make no mistake, our association needs the knowledge and
expertise of all of our members if we are to grow into the future.
So, please take a few minutes to read about what our committees do;
then, please refer to the October 2009 issue of this newsletter on
the Newsletter page of the ATI website to contact the ATI Board
member(s) heading up a committee to get involved. |

HART NAMED "OUTSTANDING
TRANSIT SYSTEM" BY FPTA
Tampa’s Hillsborough Area Transit Authority
(HART), a longtime ATI organizational member, was named “Outstanding
Transit System” at a November 11th
meeting of the Florida Public Transportation Association.
HART was
selected for this award for showing consistent ridership growth over
the past three years; for its effective fiscal management; and for
its achievements in safety, marketing and customer relations, among
other advancements. At the same meeting, ATI Board member and HART
travel trainer Mark Sheppard was presented with the Center for Urban
Transportation Research’s “Research Champion Award,” for his
assistance and support on the Travel Assistance Device project, a
cell-phone enabled device that helps people with disabilities ride
easier by alerting them when their stop is approaching. |
