PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE BY MARY RIEGELMAYER
I am very pleased to
report to ATI members that we have received two excellent proposals
for our next annual conference in the summer of 2011.
Our two competing
conference host proposals come from ATI members in Boulder,
Colorado, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. ATI’s officers and
directors discussed both proposals at an October Board meeting but
no final selection was made. I can recall that it was just a few
years ago that ATI had difficulty finding one proposal to host an
annual conference. The fact that we have two competing conference
proposals for 2011, just as we did this year, is evidence of ATI’s
growth and strength as an organization. Let me assure all ATI
members that your Board will decide the location of our 2011
conference soon, and that we will get our Call For Papers to all of
you in a timely fashion to insure an outstanding 2011 conference.

ORGANIZATIONAL MEMBERS SUPPORT ATI IN A BIG WAY
Have you ever wondered why the Association of Travel Instruction
has Organizational members?
First and foremost, our Organizational members, like our Individual
and Auxiliary members, value ATI’s mission to support providers of
travel training services. While each of our Organizational members
must designate just one person as their “voting member” during our
Annual Meeting and Election of Directors, Organizational members may
receive conference registration discounts if more than two of their
travel trainers attend an annual conference. Organizational
membership helps keep our vibrant yet small association financially
solvent. So
CLICK HERE to view a list of our current Organizational members,
who we thank very much for their support. And, if you wish to have
your organization join their ranks for just $100 per year,

ATI MEMBER SHINES AT
THE APTA BUS AND PARATRANSIT CONFERENCE
We always like to recognize ATI members who spread the word about
travel training at events other than our professional development
conferences.
So we acknowledge ATI member Julia Schick of Laketran in
Painesville, Ohio. Julia partnered with Shanices Chambers-Robinson
of the Training and Development Dept. at the Greater Cleveland
Regional Transit Authority to present about travel training at this
past Spring’s APTA event. Julia’s presentation focused on travel
training for students with disabilities and increasing accessibility
in the community, while Shanices discussed the one-to-one travel
training process and its benefits to the individual and the
community. For further information,

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF
JUSTICE ISSUES 2010 ADA STANDARDS
In September, the U.S.
Department of Justice issued long-awaited updates to its ADA
regulations and adopted new design standards for its Title II
regulations for state and local governments, and its Title III rules
for places of public accommodation.
Of particular interest to travel trainers may be revised provisions
concerning service animals, and wheelchairs and other power-driven
mobility devices. These final rules take effect on March 15, 2011
but may be used now to achieve ADA compliance. Three “fact sheets”
which provide highlights of these new regulations and standards can
be found at
http://www.ada.gov/regs2010/ADAregs2010.htm. |
