PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE BY MARY RIEGELMAYER
I am pleased to inform ATI members about some decisions made at a
recent Board of Directors meeting.
First and foremost, we will be developing a five year plan for our
organization, and we hope to accomplish this goal by holding
strategic planning meetings that will definitely include member
input through the use of technology such as teleconferencing,
webinars, etc. The Board also discussed next steps in moving forward
to achieve broader acceptance of the Definition of Travel Training (CLICK
HERE to read it), which was approved by ATI members at our
August 13, 2011 Annual Membership Meeting in Philadelphia. Finally,
the Board of Directors agreed to form a committee to review and
update our website, a very important element of the future growth
and development of our profession. Have input for us about any/all
of the above?

MV-1 WHEELCHAIR
ACCESSIBLE MOBILITY VEHICLE LAUNCHED SEPTEMBER 21
The MV-1, the
first-ever automobile designed from the ground up to be accessible
to individuals who use mobility devices, was officially launched on
September 21st at AM General’s Mishawaka, Indiana plant.
The Vehicle Production Group, manufacturers of the MV-1, presented
the first vehicle to roll off the assembly line to Marc Buonoconti,
President of The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. The MV-1 is
manufactured with a built-in deployable ramp or an optional
power-operated ramp, and an open front passenger seating area that
can accommodate and secure passengers using wheeled mobility
devices. The MV-1 is suitable for use as an accessible taxi, an
accessible ADA Paratransit vehicle, an accessible individually owned
and operated personal vehicle, and for many other uses. To view a 39

SUMMARY OF U.S. HOUSE OF
REPRESENTATIVES SURFACE TRANSPORTATION REAUTHORIZATION PROPOSAL
Back in early July, Representative John L.
Mica (R-FL), Chair of the House Transportation and Infrastructure
Committee, unveiled a six-year surface transportation
reauthorization proposal.
As ATI members may know, the last major surface transportation
authorization law, commonly known as SAFETEA-LU, expired on
September 30, 2009. Since that time, a total of eight (8) short term
extensions of SAFETEA-LU have passed the Congress and become law so
that transit funding has continued to flow to critical local transit
and highway improvement projects. However, Rep. Mica has stated
emphatically that he will not support another short-term SAFETEA-LU
extension. His proposal authorizes $230 billion over six years for
needed transit and highway projects. Among many other provisions in
Rep. Mica’s proposal, it would reform surface transportation
programs by consolidating or eliminating approximately 70 programs
that are duplicative or do not serve a federal purpose; removes
current barriers that prevent the private sector from offering
public transportation services; and, provides more of a focus on
transit programs that benefit suburban and rural areas and will
improve transit options for the elderly and disabled. For more
information,

entitled A New Direction. |
